The Impressionism of Hua Jiankun

Hua Jinakun, one of the most respected impressionists in Northern China, was born in 1945 at Tailai County of Heilongjiang Province. He studied graduate and post graduate courses in the Department of Oil Painting at Luxun Academy of Fine Art in Shenyang in the 1970’s. He worked as Art Editor and Chief Art Editor at Bengang Daily since 1978.

Hua Jiankun is an artist with passion for life. In early 90’s, he resigned from his work and traveled through the mountain area of Manchu Autonomy County to revitalise his passion for life and art. Staying in the mountain area for 8 years, Hua had created many remarkable works. Traveling is another means to stimulate Hua’s creativity; he had traveled to Europe and North America alone to experience the romantic yet hard life of being a traveling artist.

Hua uses bold strokes and bright colour to record what he saw. Being an impressionist, some of his paintings are bold and abstract. Yet you can tell there are meanings behind the abstract forms, the fusion of the emotion of the artist and forms of the object conveys a special post impressionism touch to his paintings.

In 1979 and 1980, Hua received first prize in Reportorial Artwork Show at Liaoning Province and Northeast China respectively. In 1989, he was invited to exhibit at China Academy of Fine Art, and in 1990 and 1991 in Koyama and Tokyo respectively. 1992, he held an exhibition in Chinese Art Gallery in Beijing and the event was widely reported by local and overseas media. Other than Japan and big cities in China, he has exhibited in Russia, America and South East Asian. His works are collected by local and overseas art lovers.

“Rustic Charm” The Pointillist Solo Exhibition of Li Fang Lin

Li Fang Lin was born in 1943 in Sichuan Province and graduated from Sichuan Institute of Art in 1963. He is a member of the Chinese Artists Association and a famous country artist in China.

Li had worked in the rural village of northern Sichuan for more than 30 years; he is well acquainted with the mountains, rivers, fields, forests, soil, crops, farm houses and village markets of that area. Li’s works exude a unique native atmosphere that represents his feelings and memories of the land and the lifestyle that he misses a lot. His tranquil and natural style gives his works a touch of simplicity and peacefulness. Li employs the ‘Pointillism’ technique initiated by George Seurat, the prominent representative of Neo-Impressionism. Pointillism painting is created by placing small dots of primary colours in such a manner as to create an impression of blended complimentary and secondary colours. The success relies on the perceptive ability of the eyes and mind of the viewer to mix the color spots into a fuller range of tones. The technique requires profound understanding of the colour theory and a lot of practice. Li is one of the very few who can master the technique and persevered with it.

He has participated in many provincial and national art exhibitions. His paintings “Small Town on Slab Stone Beach” and “Path at the Hill” were in the collection of the China National Museum. Li’s works have been widely reported by the news media including China Central TV, Beijing TV, Xinhua News Agency, People’s Daily (overseas edition), China Culture news, and are considered unique and notable.

“Charming Landscape” The Pointillist Solo Exhibition of Chen Zhang Hong

Chen Zhang Hong was born in Yangjiang City, Guangdong province, China, in 1966. He graduated from the Arts School of the Zhanjiang Normal University in 1988. After his graduation, he worked as an artist and arts teacher. Since 2005, he became a full time painter and currently resides in Yangjiang City.

Growing up in countryside of southern China has given him the most profound feeling and sensitivity to art. His dialogue with nature is carried out symbiotically through his works. For Chen, there is nothing static in his approach, but rather an oscillation, a dynamic movement of nature. He sees the beauty of nature and his paintings explore a philosophical and poetic side of life.

He takes technique seriously. He integrates Seurat’s pointillist method to best represent a harmonious life. Each point, each line and each segment combines with his enviable energy, perseverance, passion.

Chen’s works are collected by corporate and individual collectors in US, Europe and Asia.

Remarks by Art Critic

The Chinese contemporary art scene and the market for this work is still in its infancy. It has really just begun. I think the biggest challenge for contemporary artists in China is to continue making innovative and interesting work that stands apart from the crowd. Chen Zhang Hong’s work has made the exploration of his own presence the subject of his art, ranging fom boat scenes, personage bodies to pointllist landscapes and cosmo. His work is connected intimately with fundamental human experience.
Larry Warsh, Art Critic

Chen’s works synthesize a cosmic order of heaven, land, people, seemingly saying to the viewers – “What A Wonderful World.”

“The Beauty of Lijiang River” Landscape of Guilin Exhibition

It is well-known that ‘Guilin is the most scenic place under heaven, and Yangshuo’s scenery is the best in Guilin’. The beauty of Guilin and Yangshuo lies in the Lijiang River. The Lijiang River section that winds between Guilin and Yangshuo measures over 80 km. The landscape is decorated with connecting hills, startling cliffs, and silky clear water with impeccable reflections. The charm of the Lijiang River sustains regardless of time and season. The best is when the area is veiled by rain and mist, it becomes a master piece of ink and brush painting. The beauty of the Lijiang River also lies in its activities – osprey fishing, ducks and geese swimming, cattle grazing, farmers planting, add a touch of humanities to the picturesque scenery.

Affectionate landscape naturally breeds a group of excellent local artists and hence the establishment of the ‘Lijiang River School of Paintings’. Being inspired by the beautiful landscape and love of their home town, the artists of the Lijiang River School express the charming landscape of Guilin in unique techniques and styles. Traditional Chinese painting is the mainstay of the Lijiang River School of Paintings. Yet the artists sketch the actual scenery with artistic conception instead of pure ideology. The outcome is a typical southern pastoral style with a realistic, gentle and cultivated touch.

We choose 6 Guilin landscape painters’ works in this exhibition; they are He Shanling, Shen Lingxiang, Liao Linsen, Su Fei, Wu Zhaoli and Zhang Quanzhong. Painting the Lijiang River is an artist’s dream. Each artist use their brushes to express their feeling, their love and their passion for the scenery and life of Guilin.

A Hong Kong born Chinese, Eliza received her tertiary education in England. She has been painting since 1998, the year when she made a career turn from management consultancy to art. Having an upbringing in a traditional Chinese family, and a strong exposure to the western cultures throughout her education and career development, her contemporary art carries a blend of eastern and western cultural influence.

In summer 2011, she obtained an MFA in Painting with the Academy of Art University, San Francisco. Through delving into the subject of abstract painting during her years of study, the bodies of her art have embraced a major shift from representational roots to pure conceptual compositions and abstract expressionism.

Eliza has had solo shows in Hong Kong. She also exhibits annually with Artists Abroad, an art group composed of some international artists in which she has been the Treasurer and board member since 2002. She actively participates in various local community projects and artist-in-residency programs. Last year with the “Lines” series of her works, she was shortlisted for a New York based AIR program organized by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council. A piece from the “Bubbles” series also got selected into the juried competition and exhibition by Hong Kong Oil Painting Research Society. She has done commissioned work for private collectors as well as corporations. Eliza currently lives in Hong Kong where she teaches private lessons in art and painting.

Three Quarter Column Where Imagination Leads” Abstract Art Exhibition

Abstract art is a branch of art emerged in the West in the 1910s that broke from the tradition that a painting had to represent something. Before that, realist and impressionist artists painted objects and landscape exactly as how they saw them. In abstract art, artists present their subjective experience and imagination of the objects and scenery they painted. Relative image of the scenery or object no longer exists. Viewers have to use their imagination and senses to explore and interprete the works or art. Most abstract paintings represent things that are not visual. Points, lines, surfaces, forms, colour and texture become the elements that convey the artists’ emotion and spiritual experiences. To understand abstract art, you need to have keen senses and open imagination. Allowing your senses to be linked up with your sight and wandering around the painting and see where it takes you. Abstract art should be admired in the same way as that of listening to music. Let the elements of the painting flow through your senses the way the notes of music wash over your soul. One of the beautiful things about abstract art is its opening to interpretation. Abstract art gives you freedom to explore the artwork and assign your own meaning to the piece. This personalised process enriches a viewer’s experience of an artwork.

Some people may think that abstract art is easy. However, painting or creating abstract arts is not as simple as they look. It demands great drawing skill and a heightened sensitivity for composition and colours. For a piece of abstract art to have significance for anyone other than the artist, it needs to have something that can retain the viewer’s attention, draw them in, keep them looking, and generate an emotional response. Let’s admire abstract art with an open mind and an open heart – let imagination leads.

“Sketching China” Solo Exhibition of Huang He

Born in 1955 in Guangzhou, China, Huang He received a bachelor degree of fine art from the Sculpture Department of Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts in 1982. He went to Australia for further study in 1988 and was widely involved in oil painting. His pieces such as “Meditation” earned him the special prize of the National Sculpture Exhibition in Australia. In 2000, he returned to his homeland where he was appointed a visiting professor at the Institute of Visual Art at Fudan University, Shanghai and Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts. He was involved in creating and planning a wide collection of public sculptures and exhibitions. His sculpture work “The 78th” was selected to the National Arts Exhibition and became the permanent collection of Guangdong Museum of Art.

Majoring in sculpture making, sketching is Huang’s sources of inspiration. He enjoys sketching on streets or in public transportation in order to maintain his acute sensitivity to daily life. Sketching also induces his passion for painting. Huang’s paintings bear the characteristics of his sculpture works; the powerful strokes represent self-confidence, strength and passion. Huang’s bold and unrestrained drawing technique is well received.

Huang has the valuable noble quality of an artist, wholehearted persistence and indulgence in pursuit of arts. Even at middle ages, Huang still has such admirably poetic, passionate and pure ideals.

“Sketching China” includes pieces of Huang He’s oil paintings in recent years. Most of these works are on-site sketching with focus on countryside, metropolitan, flora and still objects and portrait, etc. As an adventurer of the life journey, Huang expresses his unique experiences in every day life with strokes and sculpture knife. The exhibition will also display some pieces of Huang’s sculpture work, enabling visitors to appreciate both his paintings and sculptures.
